Pyrolysis GC-MS

The Pyrolysis GC-MS is a coupling technique that allows the analysis of smallest sample amounts. In the so-called pyrolysis step the sample material is quickly heated beyond its thermal decomposition point (usually >500°C) in absence of oxygen.

Thus the molecules are thermally “cracked” into smaller volatile fragments which are then transferred into the GC-MS for identification. The evaluation of the fragment mixture can be used to identify the chemical nature of the original sample.

This way detailed information about the chemical characteristics of unknown polymers (rubbers, adhesives, plastics, etc.) and their additives (plasticizers, stabilizers, antioxidants, etc.) can be obtained.

Applications

  • Characterization of polymers
  • Additive analysis of polymers
